Using Carplay or Android Auto With Your Nexar Dash Cam

It is best to use Carplay and Android Auto wired (with a USB cable). If you are wondering how to do that or how to use them wirelessly, keep reading.

Using Carplay or Android Auto wirelessly while streaming

It is not possible to use Carplay and Android Auto wirelessly while streaming videos to your phone.

Wireless Carplay and Android Auto connect your phone to your vehicle’s infotainment system using WiFi connection, which is the same way the Nexar dash cam connects and streams video to your phone.

Since phones can only connect to one WiFi signal at any given time, it’s not possible to use Carplay or Android Auto wirelessly with the Nexar app and dash cam when streaming during a drive or while you're saving videos from the dash cam.

The Nexar dash cam will record to its internal memory even if you're not streaming while driving. In most Nexar dash cams, you can recover these videos directly from the dash cam's SD card using a computer.

For NEXC2, you can use the Nexar Memory Card Reader App.

For Nexar One, you can recover these videos at a later time through the Nexar app.

Using Carplay or Android Auto wired while streaming

It is possible to use Carplay and Android Auto wired (with a USB cable) while streaming videos to your phone.

If you would like to use Carplay or Android Auto while you are streaming, it is possible to do so, just not wirelessly.

We recommend connecting your phone to your car’s infotainment system using a USB charging cable. This way, the Nexar WiFi network won’t be interrupted while streaming and won’t interfere with Carplay or Android Auto while in use.

Recovering Nexar One videos at a later time

If your phone can only connect to your car wirelessly, no worries. You can still get drive recordings from the dash cam and save them at a later time. But we recommend doing this as soon as possible since the dash cam will loop record old drives to record new ones.

To save videos from the dash cam after a drive

  1. Stay near the dash cam and disable Carplay or Android Auto from your phone.
  2. Keep your phone’s WiFi and Bluetooth enabled. We use these to connect and get the video from the dash cam.
  3. Open the Nexar app > Videos > tap the Drive you want to save
  4. Tap Save to cloud.
  5. Trim the portion you want to keep.

Clips that you created from the app, as well as important incidents created by the dash cam, are backed up to the cloud automatically using the +Connectivity add-on for Nexar One, or the phone’s cellular data or WiFi connection.

Will wireless Carplay or Android Auto affect the videos that are recorded in the Nexar dash cam?

No, they will not. The Nexar app and dash cam save videos independently of one another. Any videos saved in the dash cam will never be affected by Carplay or Android Auto.

Wireless Carplay and Android Auto will only affect live streaming videos while driving since they can interfere with recording videos to your phone. Using them will not change your overall experience with the Nexar dash cam itself since the camera will still record videos with or without a phone connected to it while driving.

This means that if you choose to drive with Carplay or Android Auto wireless, you can still  save your videos to the app and cloud later within the day without any problem.

Please note that if you choose to drive with Carplay or Android Auto wireless during your drive, then we recommend saving important moments as soon as possible before they get overwritten with new drive recordings.
