Automatic Streaming Troubleshooting

The Nexar app uses your phone’s WiFi and Bluetooth to connect to the dashcam. When the app detects that your dashcam is turned on, it will start to cache and stream videos to your phone.

Verify your dashcam streams video to your phone

Whenever your phone detects your dashcam is on, you will get the Nexar is recording notification. After getting this notification, you can open the app to see the stream from your dashcam.

Automatic streaming troubleshooting

There are several things that can get in the way of activating automatic streaming. Read on to learn how to troubleshoot and resolve these problems.

Missing app permissions for iPhone users

App permissions need to be enabled for Nexar to access specific services on your phone to make streaming work. As a Nexar One user, you can see which permissions need to be enabled by going to the Nexar app and tapping More. To enable the missing permissions, simply tap the Allow button and follow the banner’s instructions.

The following permissions are essential for the automatic streaming feature:

  • WiFi - for streaming the video files from the dashcam to your phone
  • Bluetooth - for detecting when you started and ended your drives
  • Local network - for enabling your phone to connect to the dashcam’s network
  • Notifications - for notifying about start/end stream and important dashcam events
  • Background app refresh - for enabling your Nexar app to start streaming in the background

Missing app permissions for Android users

Most Android phones have a security feature that automatically disables permissions on apps that are not often used in order to protect your data. Check your phone’s settings to make sure this feature is disabled for your Nexar app.

To check, go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > search for Nexar > Permissions > toggle Remove permissions if the app isn’t used should be disabled.

The following permissions are essential for the automatic streaming feature:

  • WiFi - for streaming the video files from the dashcam to your phone
  • Bluetooth - for detecting when you started and ended your drives
  • Notifications - for notifying about start/end stream and important dashcam events
  • Location - required by the operating system for allowing streaming in the background
  • Storage - to save the streamed video files on your Nexar app

Other settings required for a seamless automatic streaming experience:

  • Battery optimization - to allow Nexar to record in the background even when the battery is on low power mode. In case it’s enabled, it will close the app to reserve the battery. Enter your phone’s settings:
    • Battery and device care > Disable Power saving mode
    • Tap Background usage limits > disable Put unused apps to sleep
    • Go to More battery settings > disable Adaptive battery

*These instructions apply to most Samsung phones. Your phone’s Settings menu may look different depending on the brand and model. Please check your phone manufacturer’s website for specific instructions on disabling battery optimization and/or other background battery usage limitations.

Using wireless Carplay and Android Auto while automatically streaming

Wireless Carplay and Android Auto cannot be used when streaming with the Nexar app. This is because both these features and the dashcam need to use WiFi to connect to your phone. Since phones can only connect to one WiFi signal at a time, you cannot connect to both simultaneously. If you want to use these features and stream dashcam videos at the same time during your drive, we recommend connecting your phone to your vehicle’s infotainment system using a USB cable.

Otherwise, you can still retrieve the videos at the end of your drive.

Using Nexar dash cams with hybrid or electric cars

When a hybrid car stops at a stoplight or a drive-thru, it idles the car’s engine to save power and gasoline. In some vehicles, it will also cut the power going to the cigarette lighter port.

If your dashcam is connected to a port that stops receiving power when the car is idle, it will turn off and stop recording. Streaming will be interrupted and the drives saved in the app will be incomplete. If your car has this kind of power mechanism, it’s best to plug the dashcam into a power source that only turns on and off at the beginning and end of a drive.

Your Nexar dashcam is connected to a continuous power outlet

A continuous power outlet means your car’s power port supplies power to the dashcam even if the engine is off. Since the dashcam turns on and off with the car’s engine, it will not properly detect when you have stopped driving because it’s still receiving power.

Read more about continuous power outlets. If you have a continuous power outlet, do the following:

For iPhone users

  1. Open the Nexar app
  2. Tap More > Dash cam/s
  3. Tap the Continuous power outlet toggle to switch it on/off
  4. Go to phone Settings > Nexar
  5. Toggle on Motion & fitness permission

For Android users

  1. Open the Nexar app
  2. Tap More > Dash cam/s
  3. Tap the Continuous power outlet toggle to switch it on/off
  4. Go to phone Settings > Apps > Nexar
  5. Toggle on Physical activity

Connected to another WiFi network before starting your drive?

If you start a ride while connected to a home WiFi network, don't worry - just continue driving. Your dash cam will connect once you’ve driven away from that home network.
